What actually happens when you talk to a stranger

Most advice about talking to strangers online is written by people who have never measured it. We read 637,832 messages across 9,854 real anonymous conversations to find out what separates the ones that go somewhere from the ones that die in under a minute.

The single strongest signal was not charm, or humour, or having something clever to open with. It was turn-taking.

The finding: we measured balance as the quieter person's share of the turns, where 100% is perfect back-and-forth and 50% means one person is doing twice the talking. In the first eight messages, conversations that went on to reach forty messages were at 100% balance — flawless alternation. The ones that died before ten messages were at 67%. The gap is visible from message two, long before anyone has said anything interesting.

That is a genuinely useful thing to know, because it is entirely within your control and it costs nothing. You do not have to be interesting. You have to not monologue. Two people alternating single words will outlast one person sending thoughtful paragraphs into silence, every time.

How to start

Say hello and ask one thing. In our corpus, an opener that combined a greeting with a question produced a median conversation of 38 messages, and 77% of those reached ten messages at all — the best performance of any opening style we measured.

Keep it short. Only 5% of messages in real stranger chat run past twenty words, and the register is casual to the point of being a dialect of its own: roughly half of all messages start lowercase and only 3.8% end with a full stop. A polished, correctly punctuated paragraph reads as a bot, and gets treated like one.

Who you will meet

Strangers, from wherever the internet reaches. You will see roughly who someone is — their age band and gender — and nothing that could identify them, because we do not collect anything that could. No real names, no phone numbers, no profile to stalk.

Some conversations will be dull. That is not a flaw in the platform, it is what meeting people is like, and the fix is the same as in life: leave and meet someone else. The skip button is one tap and you never have to explain yourself.

Is it safe?

Safer than it was, and safer if you use it properly. We run automatic moderation, one-tap block and report, and images that expire after a single view. But the structural protection is the anonymity itself: there is nothing on your profile to leak, because there is no profile.

The rule that matters more than any feature: do not move to another platform with someone you met five minutes ago, and do not send anything you would mind a stranger keeping. Everything else is detail. We wrote a fuller version of this in staying safe on anonymous chat.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need an account to talk to strangers?
No. Pick an age band and a gender and you are in — that is the entire sign-up. Those two exist so the person you match with knows roughly who they are talking to. An optional account lets you keep a username and a friends list, but nothing requires it.
Is it really free?
Yes. Text chat with strangers is free with no time limit and no daily cap. There is a paid tier that removes ads and adds voice and video calls, but the core of the site does not sit behind it.
Can strangers see who I am?
They see an age band, a gender and a username you can change or randomise. They do not see your name, email, phone number or location, because we never ask for them.
What if someone is abusive?
Block and report are one tap each, in the chat itself. Blocking ends the conversation immediately and prevents that person being matched with you again. You never have to reply, explain, or say goodbye.
How long does a conversation usually last?
In our analysis of 9,854 real conversations, the median ran 32 messages. Most simply stop — 86.7% end without anyone saying goodbye. That is normal for stranger chat and not a sign anything went wrong.
