Why text, when the format was built for video
Chatroulette launched in 2009 and gave the category its name — random one-to-one video with a Next button. The format is genuinely good and its central problem is equally well known: putting strangers on camera immediately, anonymously, with no cost to behaving badly, produces exactly what you would predict.
Text changes the economics of that. There is nothing to flash. The worst case is a message you close, rather than an image you cannot unsee, and skipping costs the sender their entire investment. It is a less thrilling product and a considerably better one to spend an evening in.
Voice and video do exist here. They sit behind an account and a subscription, which is not an upsell so much as a filter — nobody pays $4.99 a month to expose themselves once to a stranger who can block them in one tap.
What text chat is actually good at
Video gives you everything at once and then has nothing left. Text reveals a person slowly, and it turns out people synchronise as it goes. We measured this across 637,832 messages of real stranger chat.

Read the top of that table carefully, because it is the most useful line in it. Send one word and you get six back. Send thirty and you get thirty. The floor is generous and the ceiling is not — meaning the cost of opening briefly is almost nothing, while the cost of opening at length is that you have set a pace the other person now has to match or abandon.
This is why "hey" works and a paragraph does not. Not because effort is unwelcome, but because a long opener asks a stranger for a commitment before they have decided whether they want to talk to you at all.
What you give up
Honestly: the immediacy. Seeing a face tells you in half a second what text takes five minutes to establish, and for some people that trade is not worth it. If what you want is specifically random video with strangers, this is not that, and we would rather say so than waste your evening.
What you get instead is the ability to be somewhere without being seen — which for most people, most nights, is the version they actually wanted.
